This week I was mostly on campus, leaving only once to visit my friend in the center of Kuala Terengganu, 11.3 miles from the Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.
Over the course of my journey, I have traveled approximately 9,172 miles (or 14,760.9 kilometers).
Bike and car! A few weeks ago I was lucky to catch a ride on the back of my friend’s scooter. What a fun ride! But be sure to wear a helmet, and hold on tight... scooters don’t have seatbelts!
I loved visiting Anupa’s lab. Anupa is working with shrimp, studying the impact of a natural plant extract on shrimp in the presence of bacteria. She hopes that the natural plant extract will have the ability to help shrimp combat bacterial infection.
Many students at UMT are working with shrimp due to their value in the growing field of aquaculture (growing aquatic life in artificial environments). As the field of aquaculture expands, the need for better food sources and way of preventing disease increases. Studies such as Anupa’s, which indicate the benefit of food or medicine on the organism being cultured, may greatly improve “aqua-cultural” practices.
