Sending abrazos (hugs) from La Palma, one of the Canary Islands! I am writing to you from the beautiful city of Santa Cruz de La Palma, Spain. When I was in Mrs. Wilson's class 12 years ago, I had never heard of the Canary Islands and did not know how to speak any languages other than English. But I always loved learning about other countries and cultures, and it is amazing how education can open up your world.

I lived in Placerville from when I was when I was nine until I was 11 and went to Camino School just like you. One of my favorite projects at Camino was the Living History project. When I was your age I liked art, cooking, eating apple doughnuts, and seeing the Christmas trees on Main Street after Thanksgiving.

Then my family moved to the Bay Area for middle school and high school. I wanted to study Spanish in high school because of how important Spanish is in the United States and the world today. Do any of you speak other languages? In high school I also ran cross country and track, and I think running in Mrs. Wilson's class may have influenced me.

I went to college at Dartmouth in New Hampshire, where I enjoyed hiking in the mountains and learning to cross country ski with my friends.
