Excursions in Europe

Introduction:

As I have mentioned before, in the summer of 2018 I was part of a six-week study abroad program. Before summer approached, the Purdue Spanish professor who directed the program held informational meetings in December of 2017, right before winter break. The program directors gave us a lot of advice about how to travel on our own and emphasized that we should never walk alone at nighttime in the city. Our program leader instructed that if we were out late to dinner, we should order an Uber home to our host mom. Then he encouraged us to think about where we would want to travel besides Spain, because domestic flights are so cheap in Europe! Traveling from California to New York is usually far more expensive than flying from Spain to Italy, for example.  We'd have a chance to explore!

The program was six weeks long, and we all chose two classes to take in Spanish. We attended classes Monday through Thursday, and almost every day after class, around 2 p.m., we were free to go to the beach or explore the city of Palma on our own. We had three free weekends to plan our own excursions, while the other three weekends were planned by the program. These excursions were planned adventures where we would take a train or bus exploring different areas of the island. Since our group was so large, we were unable to do the same activities all at once, so we split up into smaller groups.
