To me, this means that every new place, person and question can teach us something important.
Through this exchange, we also helped build an understanding between Việt Nam and the United States. Our two countries have a long and complicated history. Today, they continue to grow in friendship, healing and reconciliation. By learning about daily life, school, food, traditions and transportation in Việt Nam, you helped continue that bridge of understanding.
I also think it is special that many of you are learning English, just like my students in Việt Nam. Việt Nam is making big educational strides to help students learn English as an important second language. English can help students connect with people around the world. In that way, you and my students here are both learning tools to share your voices with others.
When I first arrived in Việt Nam, many things felt new. I had to learn how to get around, try new foods and use Vietnamese every day. Sometimes, I felt nervous, but I kept asking questions and trying. Little by little, I became more confident.
That is what I hope you remember: you can explore the world, too. You do not have to travel far right now. You can begin by staying curious, learning about new places, listening to other people’s stories and asking thoughtful questions.
One day, you may travel, study abroad, volunteer or even live in another country. There are many paths to make that happen. Keep learning, keep asking questions and believe that your story can connect with the world.
Thank you for following my journey and for being such thoughtful learners. Your questions helped me grow, too. This is not goodbye forever.
