Flavors of Botswana

Introduction:

The diet in Botwana is very meat-based because cows are very commonly owned and are actually one of the country's biggest exports. Along with the high-protein diet, the food in Botswana is meant to be very filling and nourishing with easy-to-make carb dishes. The best part about discovering new foods in Botswana is the different flavor combinations in each dish. 

What food did I try?:

I tried many different foods coming to Botswana. Palache or pap is the common starch made from maize meal which many people eat with soup or stew. Samp is also a common food usually mixed with beans for some protein. The diet in Botswana is mainly meat and carbs. Seswaa is pounded meat which can be from a cow or goat. Additional sides are mashed butternut squash, beetroot, and coleslaw. 

How did I feel when I tried it?:

There are many different flavors represented in all of the different foods on the plate. I enjoyed the variety of sides offered and the flavors of the meat and stew. The best was the chakalaka, a vegetable relish, which had a burst of spicy and warm flavors making the dish satisfying and addictive. I now cook it at home all the time!

How is the food prepared?:

My favorite food in Botswana has been chakalaka, which is made of chopped veggies, tomatoes, beans and plenty of seasonings.
