One of the best parts of traveling to different countries is seeing new places, trying new food and meeting new people from different cultures. One of the best parts of living in a different country is that those once-new things become normal. You don’t just see the traditions, you get to experience them!

Today, I am excited to introduce some of the traditions and customs of Taiwan! However, before we can learn about some of the unique traditions of Taiwan, we should learn a bit more about Taiwan itself.

Confusingly, Taiwan is also known as the Republic of China or the ROC. It is sometimes confused with the People’s Republic of China or the PRC. Try not to mix up these two places. Taiwan is a small island nation while China is the most populous country on Earth with a population of over 1.4 billion people.

For context, the entire island of Taiwan has a population of about 23.5 million people (about two million more than the state of Florida), while just the Chinese city of Shanghai has over 26 million people.

Modern-day Taiwan is actually quite young, having only been around since 1945, the end of World War II. However, much of the history of Taiwan can be traced back thousands of years.
