When all that trash goes into landfills, it can pollute the soil, rivers and air. That makes the environment unhealthy for people, animals and plants. Plus, when people don’t recycle, it wastes materials that could be turned into new things, such as paper, bottles and cans. Recycling saves natural resources and helps keep the planet clean. Many families didn’t know how or where to recycle, so Centro Verde also teaches people about environmental education. They learn how to protect the Earth by making small changes at home, such as by sorting trash or using less plastic.
Yes! The need is starting to be met thanks to the Centro Verde project and the help of the city and community. Centro Verde is a big recycling center that collects and sorts materials, including paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and metal. The city placed many Puntos Verdes (Green Points) around the community. These are big green bins where families can drop off recyclables. Many of the workers at Centro Verde are part of a recycling group called a cooperative. They sort the materials safely and send them to factories to make new products. The city also runs school programs called Escuelas Verdes (Green Schools) to teach kids how to recycle and take care of the environment. More people are learning how to separate trash at home, which means less garbage goes to the dump and more is reused. Even though the community is doing much better, there is still work to do. Not everyone recycles, and sometimes people forget to separate their trash.
