For my class, my classmates and I visited Luján de Cuyo, a neighborhood in Mendoza where they have started to care more about sustainability. That means they care about their impact on the environment. We visited a place called Centro Verde (Green Center) and learned about how this place has helped to change the neighborhood for the better.
In Luján de Cuyo, the community needs better ways to manage trash and recycling. Every day, people throw away discarded items such as bottles, paper, cardboard and plastic. Many of these things could be recycled instead of going to the garbage dump. Before Centro Verde was built, people didn’t have an easy way to recycle. Many families mixed everything together in one trash bag. The community needed a place where people could separate what can be reused from what has to be thrown away. The city also needed to help people called recyclers or waste workers. These are people who collect materials that can be recycled. Before, many of them worked in unsafe conditions, but now Centro Verde gives them a safe, clean and fair place to work.
