In Portugal, a majority of people work for small businesses particularly in the tourism or services industries, such as working at restaurants, barber shops or as teachers or government workers. This year, I spoke to many people who own their own businesses. I asked a question: why there are only six women entrepreneurs for every ten men entrepreneurs in the country? Do you know any people who started their own businesses?
School starts at 9:00 AM in the morning and ends at 3:00 PM in the afternoon.
Getting to school depends on how far you live! Some students have parents that drive them to school, while others walk or take the metro by themselves.
Students eat lunch in the cafeteria or at a little stand called a snack bar that has small sandwiches and pastries. Their favorite foods are ham and cheese sandwiches or a bacalhau and chickpea salad.
If you walked into an elementary school in Portugal, you might be surprised to be able to have a conversation with a Portuguese student! That's because students here start learning English at a very young age. To say hello, you would say "Olá, bom dia!" which means "Hello, good morning/day!" Do you speak any other languages at home or have you learned any at school?
