London Food of the Week

Introduction:

Have you ever wondered what the most famous food in England is? It's fish and chips! Poppies Fish & Chips is one of the most beloved places in all of London to try this classic dish. With its cool 1950s decorations and vintage style, walking into Poppies feels like stepping back in time.

What food did I try?:

At Poppies, I tried the classic fish and chips, a big piece of battered cod or haddock served with thick, chunky chips (that's what British people call French fries!). You can also try mushy peas, calamari and even something called whitebait, which is tiny whole fish that are deep fried and taste a little like French fries (but made of fish)!

How did I feel when I tried it?:

It was amazing! The batter on the fish was perfectly golden and crunchy on the outside, while the fish inside was soft, flaky and super fresh. The chips were thick and fluffy. It felt like a warm, cozy hug in food form, the kind of meal that makes you want to go back for more.

How is the food prepared?:

First, fresh fish like cod or haddock is dipped in a light batter made from flour and water. Then, it's carefully deep-fried in hot oil until it turns perfectly crispy and golden. The chips are cut thick from potatoes and also fried until fluffy inside and crispy outside. Everything is served piping hot, often with a wedge of lemon and tartar sauce on the side.
