Closer Than You’d Think

Some are teachers, kindergarten teachers, police officers, architects or lawyers. Others work in graphic design, statistics, the army or call centers. Many parents also own small businesses.

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

There are two shifts at our school. For half of the students, they start around 8 a.m. and finish around 1 p.m. Students wake up around 6:30/7:00 a.m. The other half of students start at 2:00 p.m. and finish at 7:00 p.m. A lot of students in the morning shift also take extra classes after school.

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Most students go to school by themselves. Many walk to school, while others take the bus or ride bikes or scooters. It is common for students to travel independently, especially if they live close to school.

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

There is no lunch period, only a 20 minute break. Some of us eat a light snack during the 20 minute break. After school, we usually go home and eat lunch with our families, which may be a bean soup or some kind of meat stew. Many of them love sweets!

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

We speak Albanian at home, sometimes speak English online with friends when online gaming. Përshëndetje (Formal) or Ç’kemi (in-formal) is how you say hi! But actually the most common way of greeting someone is to skip the Hi and say, Si je?, which means, "How are you?" The 'j' in Albanian makes the 'y' sound (like in 'yes').
