To practice my German, I have been reading the book Überseezungen by Yoko Tawada, a German-Japanese author. I like this book because it discusses how language influences thought and communication, which feels relevant to this period of my life where I am using several different languages to communicate and understand the world around me.
All throughout Germany, I have found public bookcases, or in German, öffentlicher Bücherschränke. These are cases where people can exchange or take any book they would like for free. This is a great opportunity to read or explore something new in an accessible way.
My apartment is equipped with a dartboard and a pool table, so I've been using both! I hope to improve at both of these games, since I am not too great at them at the moment.
So far, I have met a lot of other foreign language assistants! Some of them, like me, are from all over the U.S and have earned Fulbright grants, but there are many others from countries including the UK, Ireland, Canada, France, Italy and Spain.
