떡국 (tteokguk) has all of my favorite foods, including rice cakes, dumplings, eggs, seaweed and meat. I was so excited to eat it that I forgot to take pictures!
Recently, I have spent a lot of time listening to my students’ favorite genre, K-pop, or Korean pop music. In Korea, almost everyone has a favorite K-pop song, and mine is Darl+ing by Seventeen. However, many of my students prefer girl groups over boy groups, and this week a girl group called Say My Name performed at my school to celebrate the new school year.
Do you like basketball? This week, I went to a women’s basketball game. In 청주 (Cheongju), the local team is called the 청주 KB 스타즈 (Cheongju KB seu-ta-jeu), or the Cheongju KB stars, and the team colors are yellow and black. Right now, 청주 (Cheongju) is battling 우리 (Oori) for a spot in the playoffs, and I can’t wait to cheer them on at another game next week!
To learn more about Korean history and culture, I joined a book club focused on Korean works in translation. Right now, we’re reading Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by 황보름 (Hwang Bo-reum). This book is one of Korea’s most popular pieces of healing fiction, or novels meant to help us escape from the stress of everyday life.
