Hallo everyone! My name is Maddie McLean, and I am 20 years old. This semester I will be spending four months in Berlin, Germany! I grew up in many places across North Carolina including Raleigh, Asheville, and Wake Forest. In North Carolina I had many interests such as reading, learning about history, volunteering at my community garden, and especially doing art!
I currently go to college at New York University in New York City where I am double majoring in Studio Art and Politics. I am studying abroad in a place that appeals to both of my interests in politics and art, so I chose Berlin, Germany! Berlin has a very interesting history, and was a focal point in WW2 and the Cold War where it was divided by the Berlin wall. In Berlin, I am studying the political tensions behind the Berlin Wall, and creating a series of artworks that centers on the impact of this history on the people of Berlin.
When I am not studying history and politics or creating art, I love to hike, swim, ride my bike around the city, or travel to neighboring countries. I go to any museums I can in my free time, especially on Museum Island, which houses five museums in the center of Berlin. I am currently staying in Kreuzberg, Berlin, which is known for its vibrant cultural and art scenes! I am also learning German, and I am excited to share the language and my adventures with all of you!
