Penghu - more motor scooters than cars!

Introduction:

Getting around in Taiwan is very different from the United States. In the United States, most people drive cars, but in Taiwan people drive motor scooters! It was really interesting getting used to driving a motor scooter, so I'm excited to share the experience with you!

How do people get around?:

In Penghu, most people get around by motor scooter. Some people also drive cars, but it's more common to drive motor scooters. The legal driving age is 18 here, but some people here start driving earlier than that. One of my sixth graders even has a motor scooter!

To get your driver's license you must pass a written test and a road test. However, because of how difficult the tests are, many people drive without a license (which is not legal) or drive electric scooters (which you do not need a licence for). If you don't drive a scooter, there is a bus system, but it's not very good. The buses only come once an hour, and they are often very early or late. People also drive cars, but usually only if they have families.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I was very nervous to drive a motor scooter for the first time. I practiced for over a month before I took my drivers test. I practiced for two to three hours a week on our driving course.
