Introduction: Marhaba (Hello!) Today, I'm writing to you about some Jordanian traditions I learned about. Although there are so many traditions from weddings to those about food, this is a snapshot of some of the ones I learned about from my friend Hanaa. I hope you enjoy learning about them!
What tradition did I learn about?: There are a lot of traditions in Jordan related to life, family, special events, guests, food and more. To learn more about some of them, I spoke with my friend Hanaa. Here are some of the ones I learned about:
- Respect for elders is important in Jordan. For example, it is not proper to eat before the elders.
- Hospitality: It is important to be generous with guests, particularly with food. When you visit a Jordanian family's house you will be encouraged to keep eating. There is even a phrase that encompasses this guest-host relationship and speaks about the desire to be generous. The phrase "الأكل ع قدّ المحبّة" translates to "As much as you love us, eat that much".
- It's improper to show the bottom of your foot. For example, when you're sitting, it's seen as disrespectful if the bottom of your feet are facing people.
- Clothing: In Jordan, people like to be more "put together" with the clothes they wear.
