I went to college at Stanford University in California, and since graduation I have moved around a bunch in the USA. I have lived in Maine, then back in a different part of California, then in Washington, DC. Finally, when my partner found a job in Bogotá, Colombia, I moved back to South America!
I have only just arrived in Paris, so I am still very much getting to know this city. I arrived at the airport to foggy, rainy weather but didn’t let that dampen my mood. I chatted with the lady in front of me in line waiting for a taxi and couldn’t contain my excitement at being in a new city. The taxi driver had to drive through the middle of Paris, and at one point I spotted a ghostly outline of La Torre Eiffel (the Eiffel Tower) in the fog! That moment was the first time I truly remember thinking to myself, “I am here.”
As some of you might know, Paris is a very multicultural and diverse city, with people from all kinds of backgrounds living there. It is the capital of France and has a population of around 1.2 million people. While walking around so far, I have heard lots of different languages being spoken besides French, and I have seen restaurants serving many different kinds of foods. For example, today I stopped by a store selling Argentinian empanadas (Latin American filled pastries) and got two piping hot chicken empanadas to eat with a delicious café au lait (coffee with milk)! It almost feels like I can be in many countries at once just by visiting the different kinds of restaurants in Paris. I am really looking forward to getting to know the city more through its coffee shops and cafes.
