A New Perspective

central library was a long walk and bus ride away in the heart of the greater N.U.S. campus. I wouldn't blame the students who lived closer to Yale-N.U.S. library for wanting to study there. Additionally, the Yale-N.U.S. library didn't have as much space or as broad a selection as the greater N.U.S. library did. I doubt students were really exploiting the resources of the library. Some Yale-N.U.S. students claimed that because they paid more to be in Yale-N.U.S. instead of NUS, so they deserved exclusive access to the spaces, and I really disagreed with their gatekeeping attitude.

From this experience, I learned how privilege can cloud your judgement. Every day on the school's Facebook groups there was some new debate at the school about people "disrespecting the military uniform" or hosting a gossip platform for students. I felt sad to see that you could have everything you ever wanted at your fingertips and instead of being happy about it, you make it your life's mission to see to it that no one else can have it.

Although this wasn't the most positive aspect of my time at school in Singapore, it still taught me a lot. It made me think hard about the choices that I want to make in my life about sharing resources with others, especially those who can't access them due to economic circumstances.
