Interview with Lam Tuyền

Max: You said that you do not go back home all the time, how often do you return home versus your relatives house?

About three or four times a week.

Max: Where do you normally sleep?

[...] My house.

What jobs do your parents have?:

My mom and dad have a restaurant that sells lots of dishes like bún riêu and bún nước lèo, this is why I really love eating that. My older brother is in IT [information technology]. He is really good at that field. My sister is like me; she is also a student.

Max: Does she have a specific major like you?

She is just 13 years old

[specialized majors only apply to students of gifted high schools in Vietnam]

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

I usually wake up at 6:00 a.m. or maybe earlier and my school starts at 7:00 a.m. But I have to be at school about 6:50 a.m. It will end at 11:30 a.m. I usually have lunch at about 12:00 p.m.

Max: Do you have any other classes after lunch?

Honestly, I have lots of classes after 11:30 a.m. It [re]starts about 1:30 p.m. and I have to study until 8:00 or 8:30 p.m. I just study at school until 5:00 p.m. then I have a break, and I have about 20-30 mins to prepare for the next classes. I am back home at 9:00 p.m.

Max: Do you take these extra classes at the school or somewhere else?

It is my teacher’s houses.

Max: And, what subjects are you studying in these extra classes?

I am learning math, IELTS [an English language test], literature and history.
