Interview with Lam Tuyền

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

I drive my motorbike by myself because my parents are really busy, so I cannot rely on them [to be able to take me].

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

I usually go to the restaurant or just order from the outside [to the school].

Obviously it [my favorite food] is bún riêu, spring rolls or something like that. I rarely eat rice because it is too dry to eat.

Max: Can you describe bún riêu for people who don't know what it is?

It has lots of toppings like eggs, balut [egg, but look this one up], I don't know how to describe it but it is made from crab, shrimp. I honestly don't know what the soup is made from. Maybe... tomato. Some seasonings I guess. The main material is the noodle that is made from rice– it is bún.

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

We talk the language that we are taught at school. Except [other than] English, we also learn Chinese and French. But, in my class we don't learn French and we learn Chinese, so we can speak Chinese at a basic level. There are two languages except English that we can speak at our school.

We make jokes in those languages. Ni Hao is really basic. Sometimes I just say to my Chinese teacher [something that means] means today you are really handsome [as a joke].

I have to speak English when I have an English period or have communications with you.
