Meeting Matilde: An Interview with an Italian University Student

In French, you say bonjour."

Do you have pets?:

"I do not in Siena. At my house in Mantova, though, I have two cats! One is gray named Romeo, after the movie The Aristocats, and my other cat's name is Caterina, as a cat pun and for Saint Caterina. Romeo is very large and is ten, while Caterina is smaller and is only four."

Have you traveled? Where have you traveled to?:

"I love to travel! I have been to many places: New York in the United States, Romania, Greece, Austria, Germany, France, Switzerland, Spain and Amsterdam, and I am sure there is more that I am forgetting. My favorite place ever to visit was Switzerland, and I hope to move there and continue studying after university. From what I have learned, traveling in Europe is a lot easier and less expensive than it is in the United States."

What do you do for work?:

"I do not work. I am a student, so I focus on my studies. In the summer, I sometimes work at cafes, but I am a student first! I am studying chemistry, and my dream job is to work in a lab or doctor's office."

Is there anything else you would like to say to students in the United States?:

"I hope you guys are having fun learning about Italy and think it is as beautiful as I do, and I hope one day you all get a chance to travel as well. There is so much to see in the world and so many places to go."
