Traveler Bio

I’m writing from Florence, Italy, during the last days of September. It has rained a few times—a refreshing change from the dry heat of Auburn, California. Florence can be very hot in the summer, but here the heat is humid, softened by breezes that drift through the river valley and weave between the tall, historic stone buildings.

My study abroad program began three weeks ago, and I’m enjoying my classes immensely. At the moment, I’m studying Ancient Rome—the Republic period—and the Italian language. In October, I’ll begin courses at the Art Academy, where I’ll focus on sculpture. When I first arrived in Florence, I bought a bike. On sunny days, I ride it to school, navigating the city’s many bike paths. Still, one has to be careful—cars, scooters, and pedestrians often wander into the lanes!

Coming to Florence to study art and Italian history truly feels like living my dream. My first trip to Italy was in 2018, and from the moment I arrived, I knew I wanted to live here. My hope is to complete one year focused on sculpture and a second year on painting. I feel incredibly fortunate to have this opportunity. While I miss my family, I’m comforted knowing they will visit me while I’m here.
