Musicians play guitar and drums as the children sing in front of each nacimiento. They dance the night away, visiting every nacimiento in town, and their performances are part of what decides the contest winner.
Overall, Christmas in rural Peru looks different from Christmas in the United States. There’s no snow, and fewer gifts and decorations, but people here still use the holiday to come together, spend time with family and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. I feel lucky to experience these traditions and share them with you!
With that, I wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy holidays! I hope you stay warm and get to have lots of fun celebrating the holiday season with your family and friends.
And next time you make hot chocolate or if you ever spot panetón at the grocery store, you can remember that kids in Peru are eating it too, all the way in South America!
