April also marks the end of harvest season. After spending many months working many hours to harvest their crops, farmers have a chance to rest before the start of the rainy season.
Because farming is such an important part of Cambodia’s environment, it was decided hundreds of years ago that the new year would be celebrated in April. Farmers were able to take a break from harvesting and planting, and families could spend more time together.
Now, the whole month of April is a time to spend time with family and celebrate the new year with one's community. People take time to visit their hometown and extended family. Many schools do not have classes in April because many students travel during that time and because the high temperatures make going to school very difficult.
As a teacher, I have a lot of time off during this Khmer New Year season. In my time off, I have enjoyed learning about the traditional games, looking at the beautiful decorations and spending time with my friends and host family. I hope you enjoyed learning about this special tradition as much as I have!
