Our News

Some of my favorites are the jazz song "Oh, Lady, Be Good," by Ella Fitzgerald, the doo-wop song "I Wonder Why" by Dion & the Belmonts, the salsa song "Quimbara" by Johnny Pacheco and Celia Cruz, and the hip-hop song "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

Many museums and cultural sites across Hungary were open for free on October 23rd due to the national holiday, so I explored the grounds of the Eger Castle! The Castle is famous for preventing a Turkish invasion of Eger during 1552 in a battle known as "The Siege of Eger."

What did I read this week?:

I'm currently reading Journey by Moonlight by Hungarian author Antal Szerb. The book was recommended to me by a former Fulbrighter!

What games or sports did I play this week?:

I rode my bike a lot once I got back to Eger, and I played the card game "Rummy 500" with some friends from my university!

Other news from this week:

Last week Thursday, October 23rd, was a national holiday in Hungary celebrating the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. In 1956, there was an uprising against the communist Hungarian People's Republic, supported by the Soviet Union. The student-led uprising attracted widespread support, overthrowing the communist government. However, the Soviet Union quickly suppressed the uprising by sending its military to Budapest and forcing those who participated in the uprising to flee Hungary. The October 23rd holiday commemorates the Hungarian Revolution, which is one of the most significant events in the history of modern Hungary and the Cold War.
