At the same time, this environment brings real challenges. The winter darkness is the most striking. In December, the sun slips away by early-afternoon and gray skies linger for days. The lack of light affects energy and mood, and bright indoor lamps become essential. I was surprised to see people pause in the middle of the street to bask in the sun like a plant (I thought the Swedes were joking when they first told me about this)! Snow and ice also pose challenges to transit. Sidewalks, bike paths, and streets all must be regularly plowed by large tractors to prevent disruptions to commuters.
Living in this environment teaches people to adapt. Layers or warm clothing, well-insulated homes, and strong public systems help residents manage the cold and darkness. From my time here, I’ve come to appreciate sunlight much more and discovered a love for saunas!
