The weather was absolutely beautiful and sunny for most of the week, especially during the days we hiked in Hehuanshan. However, towards the end of this week there was a very strong storm, Super Typhoon Champi, that passed by very close to Taiwan. It caused a lot of strong winds and rainstorms, especially in the northern and eastern sides of the country. Because I live on the western side of the island, the mountain range that runs through the middle of Taiwan provided some protection from the worst of the storm.
Hehuanshan is home to many high-altitude birds, including finches and warblers. Beyond birds, however, I found wildlife relatively sparse at such high elevation. This is likely because of the cold, thin air and limited vegetation.
