The Changing of the Life Guard

Introduction:

Recently, while out on a walk around London, I found myself behind the Household Cavalry Museum right before the changing of the Queen’s Life Guard Ceremony. Although I stumbled upon this tradition, I was blown away by how magnificent the Queen’s Guard appeared on their horses. I felt like I could have been Paul Revere watching the Redcoats and their horses galloping towards me.

What tradition did I learn about?:

The tradition I learned about was the Changing of the Queen's Life Guard. This tradition takes place at the Household Cavalry Museum, however, even though the building is a museum, it is still in working order. When you visit the museum you're able to see actual cavalrymen standing guard on live horses. When you walk into the building there are troopers tending to the horses in stables that date back to the 18th century. The building where the ceremony takes place dates back to 1750. There, in central London, the cavalry has performed the Queen's Life Guard ceremony for over 350 years!

Why does the community have this tradition?:

This tradition is connected to the purpose the Household Cavalry used to serve. The cavalry was formed way back in 1661 under the order of King Charles II as a protective measure after he was temporarily exiled in 1651.
