My name is Anthony (Antonio would be my Spanish name). What would yours be? I’m excited to bring you on my journey to Spain. I’m from San Juan, Puerto Rico, a tiny island with large mountains, crystal clear beaches and festive people. Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean. I’m studying at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. I am a fifth-year aerospace engineering student, which means I am a rocket scientist. I get to work on planes and rockets. I am half Cuban and half Puerto Rican. My father is from Cuba and my mother is from Puerto Rico. I grew up learning Spanish from my mom and my grandparents, while my dad made sure I learned English.
This is my last semester as a college student and I am taking my final classes in Spain while learning about Spanish culture. As a kid, I wondered what life and people were like around the world. With so many billions of people living on this planet, I was curious to know how other parts of the world celebrated their holidays, what they ate during dinner and what languages they spoke. When I grew up, I realized that I could not only know things about other cultures but that I could celebrate with them, dine with them and speak their language.
