Somehow, I am a magnet for jellyfish. It doesn't matter how many jellyfish there are, if there is at least one in the water, I assure you that it will find me and sting me. When I first decided to come to Malta, I was warned about the different kinds of jellyfish they have here!
There are actually over 200 types of jellyfish in Malta! Some of them look like the classic jellyfish that I've seen before. Some are very big and some are very small. All of them are translucent and have a rounded top with tentacles, but the size of the top and the length of the tentacles vary significantly.
When I first arrived and saw a big jellyfish in the water, I almost didn't believe it was a jellyfish. It was almost the size of my face! Whenever I go in the water, I like to carry a raft with me so I can hop on if I see a jellyfish. Luckily, the water is clear so they can be easy to spot if you are paying attention.
The jellyfish live in the Mediterranean Sea and are most prevalent in the summer months. Locals pay attention to which way the wind and tide are going in order to avoid them. There are beaches surrounding the island, so it is important to go to the beaches that are not facing the tide in order to have the best chance of avoiding them.
