Malta is home to a mix of cultures, so it's no surprise that almost every kind of food can be found here. Common foods include pasta, pizza, rabbit and fish; however, the most common snack item that can be bought literally anywhere are pastizz (singular) or pastizzi (plural), traditional savory pastries.
The two main types of pastizzi have peas or ricotta cheese in them. They are a type of stuffed puff pastry that crumbles like a croissant. Other fillings include chicken or Nutella. They are folded differently depending on what they are filled with, but all of them are either shaped like a diamond or a circle.
Pastizzi are very greasy and unhealthy for you so I personally can't eat more than one before I start to feel full. My Maltese coworkers and friends are always shocked when I only eat one because they are used to eating three or four at a time. Malta is actually the most obese country in Europe, and I think that part of the reason is because of their food choices.
