How we get around really depends on two things: where we need to go and how fast we need to get there. On the Canary Islands, the questions to ask when considering the type of transportation you’re going to take are: 1) if you need to get off the island or if you’re staying on it, and 2) if you’re in a rush or not.
On the islands, people tend to get around primarily by coche (car), by guagua (bus), or by avión (plane). People here don’t drive as often as people do in the small-town U.S. I usually don’t see very many cars on the road throughout the week. Instead, a car will stay parked most of the week, then be gone all weekend when people are up north or down south at one of the world-famous beaches on Fuerteventura.
Cars, though, are really only useful for people who need to leave the city on a regular basis. Most other people use the bus system. In general, there is a strong no pasa nada (don’t worry about it) attitude throughout the Canary Islands. The isleños (residents of the islands) really go with the flow on pretty much everything. And that extends to the transportation system. Although there is a bus schedule, the buses are often late.
