Usually, in the United States, Valentine's Day is associated with romantic love. But here, in Bucaramanga, they have a whole week of Valentine's Day in September. They use it to celebrate romantic love, but it is also centered around celebrating the love between friends. One of the ways this is done is through a tradition named "Amigo Secreto" which I did three times with three groups of people! Lucky me!
"Amigo Secreto," or "Secret Friend," has a couple of ways of being played. One way is sort of like "Secret Santa," which is when everyone draws a name out of a hat, and you buy a gift for that person and keep it a secret. Then, you get together and have a party. At the party, someone starts by describing their "secret friend" and everyone in the group tries to guess who it is. Finally, you give your gift to your "secret friend" and then they do the same thing, and so on until everyone has gone and received a gift.
The other way to do it is playing "secret friend" all week! So for me, everyone in my office would leave a special token every day of the week for their secret friend, and on Friday, we got a bigger gift for them and revealed who we were.
