Identifying Different Perspectives

A perspective is essentially a point of view, or what somebody thinks about something. Luckily for me, a lot of the general perspectives here in Colombia are ones I fully support and can relate to! For starters, life here is more relaxed, and a person’s family is almost always their number one priority. At dinner time, people don’t eat in front of the television and go to their room as soon as they finish. Here, dinner is a social event. Families like to sit down and spend time together; and talking is just as important as eating! Dinner will sometimes last up to two hours, or even longer, because when the food is all gone, the conversation will continue. I live with a Colombian couple, and a guy from Canada. Sometimes we will sit in the living room and just drink tea or coffee and talk. I really enjoy this time that we spend together! It only becomes a problem if I have plans scheduled, because then I have to find a way to politely excuse myself from the conversation so I won’t be late for my next activity!

Another idea here is that work shouldn’t control a person’s life. This was a big change (albeit a positive one) for me personally because my family is a bunch of work-a-holics! My mom works two full-time jobs, and my dad works six days a week (Monday through Saturday). Working long hours and multiple jobs is more common in the United States.
