Dankie for Learning About Namibia!

Journal Entry:

Time goes fast, and it is hard to believe it is time to say goodbye! I have enjoyed sharing Nambia and learning with you! Here is a quick review and note to say thanks (or dankie in Afrikaans).

We learned about what makes Namibia special. How food like schnitzel comes from a combination of African and German cultures. I shared a lot of photos of Namibia's special desert and beach town Swakopmund. You learned of my love for guinea fowl! You learned from Neilsa what it is like to be a kid in Namibia. You went on a neighborhood tour with me in Klein Windhoek, where you saw my daily life. I also shared how I find my place in a new country by volunteering, learning greetings in the local languages, and, of course, by dancing!

We covered a lot! I hope all of these small lessons leave you with one big lesson: Namibia is not so different from the U.S., and Windhoek is a city in the same way that Queens is a city. There are some differences between the two places to do with plants, the culture, and the environment. However, Namibian children go to school just like you do! Many people think Africa is just so different that they are too scared to visit!

My favorite scientist Marie Curie has a great quote, "Nothing in life is to be feared. It is to be understood.
