Water Shortage in Colombia

Introduction:

This part of Colombia has been impacted by climate change, with Sogamoso experiencing warmer temperatures and lower than normal rainfall, both of which factors have had major consequences on my host city as well as on the country as a whole.

What makes this environment special or different?:

Unlike in the United States, Colombia does not have typical seasons. In fact, the climate here varies greatly from region to region. For innstance, in Boyacá, the climate tends to be cooler than in other parts of the country with only two seasons: a rainy season and a dry season. The rainy season is generally considered to be March through May and October through November, while the dry season is considered December to January and July to August.

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

Colombia depends on the rainy season to supply the country’s water. As with anywhere else in the globe, adequate water supply is crucial in order to sustain everyday life. In Sogamoso, both farming, and agriculture are highly dependant on the rain that comes during the rainy season.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Currently, Colombia is facing a severe water shortage.
