Street Cats of Serbia

Introduction:

When you walk around towns like Novi Sad or Belgrade, you will find cats of all sizes and colors hiding in alleys, perching on benches or observing people as they walk by. Some of the cats are friendly, and some are shy, but they are all adorable! Street cats are important because they help make the city a lively place and remove vermin from the streets.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

In Serbia, street cats look a lot like the ones you might see in America, but they have a lot more freedom. These cats usually have thinner bodies and messier fur. The street cats can be orange, black, brown, white or a combination! Once, I met a special street cat on my way to the gym that I named Critter. She has a pretty mix of brown, orange and white fur. Every time I walked by, she would meow at me for food and attention. People in the city feed these cats, so they usually have enough to eat. But I like to bring cat treats with me, just in case I find a cat that looks hungry.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

I love cats so much that I have four of them at home in Ohio! When I moved to Serbia for nine months, I was relieved to see so many cats living in the city. One day, I saw a tiny brown kitten in a tree near my apartment, and he was meowing at me for food. I had treats, so I sprinkled some on the ground. Suddenly, ten more kittens jumped out of the bushes to join their brother!
