How to Travel Around Ordu

Introduction:

Getting around in Türkiye is a little different than it is back home. I live in a city by the sea, and while I don’t have a car, there are lots of other ways to travel. Whether I’m heading into town or meeting friends for coffee, I’ve learned how to use the local ways of getting around.

How do people get around?:

Most people here use public transportation like buses and dolmuş (pronounced dol-moosh). A dolmuş is a shared mini-bus that drives a set route, and people hop on and off as they go. Both the bus and dolmuş cost about 27 Turkish lira per ride—that’s only about 73 cents in U.S. dollars! If I’m really tired, I’ll take a taxi, but those are much more expensive (sometimes 300–400 lira, which is around $11–$15). I also have friends with cars who kindly offer me rides, especially when we’re going to places that are a little farther away, like cafes across town.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first, I was nervous about using the dolmuş and the bus because I didn’t know exactly how it worked here. But now I love it!
