This year, I am doing research in a magical place called the Azores, which is a group of nine volcanic islands in Portugal.

Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) are a tool used to help make better planning decisions and to monitor changes to the environment.

I visited Furnas Valley on São Miguel Island, where volcanic springs and geysers heat the ground. Locals use this natural geothermal heat to cook a traditional stew called cozido das furnas.

Last summer, I traveled to the Azores as a young conservationist on the Darwin200 expedition. I worked with a filmmaker to document the work of the Azores Deep Sea Research Group on Faial Island.
