Pogiso and I met at the clinic where we both volunteer and became friends right away. We try and team up on tasks and projects at work, and we like to spend time together on the weekend taking walks with her son, Sebastian, in his stroller. She has been helpful teaching me Setwana and helping me learn about the culture and customs in Botswana.
Her full name is Pogiso [poe-he-sew] Ofentse Pakowa. Pogiso means suffering and Ofentse means victory. She is 28 years old. Her son's name is Sebastian and he is 19 months old.
Pogiso lives in a one room in Kazungula. Recently her stove broke, so she is cooking over a wood fire. There is a standpipe in the yard to get water.
Her mother and father are both late, meaning they have passed away. She has four brothers and a sister. She and her twin brother are the youngest.
She mainly gets around by walking. However, she is planning to save up to take a driving course so she can get her license. Sometimes she takes a taxi, like I do, if the distance is far.
