On Friday, I went to a concert planned by the music students at my school. It was fun to go out and support them and to hear what type of music they create. The concert also gave me the opportunity to explore a new neighborhood in Berlin, which was Köpenick. It was a lot more residential and quieter than Kreuzburg.
This week, I worked on art research for my project, and found a lot of great information from the book Signs and Symbols, by Maude Wahlman. The book explores the symbols in African American quilts and their relationship to textile traditions in Africa. I am looking into ways to incorporate the symbols and textile techniques talked about in the book into my own art practice.
I did not play any games or sports this week.
I got to see Berlin light up for the Festival of Lights. Throughout the city, different landmarks are lit up and decorated with light art created by artists from around the world. I started the night at Alexanderplatz, where the TV tower showed beautiful and funny animations, then I walked to Museum Island, where the Berlin Dom lit up with bright and colorful patterns. The streets were filled with people and music. Following the crowd down Unter den Linden, I saw Humboldt University light up with floral patterns. Finally, I ended the night at the Brandenburger Tor. Overall, it was a really fun and exciting night in the city.
