South Africa has 12 official languages! Where I live in the Western Cape, the main languages spoken are English, Afrikaans and Xhosa. With so many languages, it can sometimes be hard for people to communicate with each other across cultural groups, but English is a common language that most people can speak.
The money used in South Africa is called the rand. On the rand notes, there are pictures of South Africa's five most famous animals (rhinos, elephants, lions, buffalo and leopards) on one side. On the other side, there is a portrait of Nelson Mandela, the first president of democratic South Africa.
A bottle of water usually costs about 15 rand on average. This is equal to about 80 cents in U.S. dollars.
This week, I ate zebra meat for the first time. Zebra steak is very similar in taste to antelopes I have eaten before. It tastes a lot like beef but is more "gamey," which means it has a stronger and more earthy taste.
