Taratur is a traditional Macedonian salad made with a type of yogurt called kiselo mleko, which literally means “sour milk.” It’s typically mixed with garlic, cucumbers, and olive oil to create a refreshing, creamy salad. This version had a unique twist, with fresh tomatoes and cucumbers topped with a vinaigrette dressing and served with pita chips on the side. It was a delicious take on a traditional Macedonian dish!

What music did I listen to this week?:

You can't spend a week walking around Kruševo without hearing Toše Proeski's music playing somewhere at least once. He is the most famous singer North Macedonia has ever produced, and he grew up right here in Kruševo!

Often referred to as the "Elvis of the Balkans", Toše was a huge star across the former Yugoslav countries in the early 2000s. He is still regarded as a national hero in North Macedonia. The national stadium in the capital, Skopje, is even named in his honour.

His legacy is even more deeply felt in Kruševo. One of the town's main streets bears his name, and there is a museum dedicated to his life and career: the Toše Proeski Memorial House. I've heard it described as "the Macedonian Graceland".

Tragically, Toše died in a car accident in Croatia in 2007. He was just 26, but his memory lives on. Every year, on the anniversary of his death, people from Kruševo take part in a relay run from the site of the accident in Nova Gradiška, Croatia, all the way to Kruševo. The town also comes together to celebrate his life, ensuring that his music and legacy are never forgotten.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

This week I started doing a pen pal project with my 5th grade students and students in China.
