In March 2023, I received notice that I was accepted to Brown University on full financial aid and later began my studies.
My life experiences before entering college grounded my passion for documentary journalism. At Brown, I’m taking courses that provide critical context for my work at the border while inspiring me to tell more stories about issues I care deeply about. Recently, a video essay of mine premiered in both New York City and Beverly Hills as part of the Brown Film Festival.
I am now in Spain to become more fluent in Spanish because no matter if I continue to work in immigration, the more languages I can speak, then the more people I can meet and the more stories I can share through film.
Before I go, I want to say that while I have a lot to share about my perspective as a nontraditional student, I also understand firsthand that sometimes life and family responsibilities don’t allow for that path—sometimes, going straight to college is the better option. I am losing both of my parents at a young age, one suddenly and the other now facing a terminal illness. Navigating the challenges of being a long-distance caregiver has profoundly shaped the decisions I make about my life and future. I am sure we all have a lot in common and I am really looking forward to meeting each and every one of you.
