Recycling - When Green is In

What’s the point anyway?

Why does the community have this need?:

In large cities in China, overpopulation and overconsumption play major roles in the amount of waste that is accumulated over a short amount of time. In addition to the many people living in them, Chinese cities are always expanding or revamping, actions that create even more waste. It’s hard to imagine what to do with all the waste that is produced in such large cities. The time and effort that would be put into properly sorting waste and recycling seem frightening to most.

In rural areas, however, Cindy paints a different picture. Farmers have very limited resources to work with and are not offered the same luxuries as people living in metropolitan areas. In fact, many of them are not very wealthy, so being crafty is a character that many possess. Farmers “make good use of kitchen waste and other waste, such as fertilizer.”

The need to recycle is important because by adhering to the 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) concept, the entire Chinese population is provided with a better quality of life, from the food that they eat to the air that they breathe. Without recycling, the earth is being poisoned at a very rapid rate, and these toxins will ultimately affect humans as well as every living thing in the environment.

Is this need being met? How?:

Almost all young students in China know about the 3Rs, but the primary concern is to get students to actually act on this knowledge. As a whole, the Chinese population “know the urgency of protecting the environment” and young people especially show concern over this topic. On campuses across China, “many student groups organize activities related to environmental protection.
