Penghu - Islands of Cactus!

Introduction:

You wouldn't think that cactus would grow in such a tropical area, but because it's so windy and flat here, it is the perfect location for it! Cactus is prepared in many different ways. Some of the most popular are ice cream, jelly and juice. I have even seen cactus fried rice at food stands! What do you think cactus would taste like?

What food did I try?:

I tried cactus jelly on top of shaved ice. It is great for a hot day when you want something sweet to cool you down. I bought it from a local shaved ice shop by the beach. It cost me 60 New Taiwan Dollars, which is $1.83.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I felt really excited when I tried it, because it was my first time trying cactus on Penghu! I didn't know what to expect, but I thought it would taste sour. It actually just had a very mild sweet taste and was really bouncy. I was surprised when I tried it because the taste did not match my expectations. The color is a deep red, which I think looks really pretty! The syrup from the jelly mixed with the shaved ice and created a really refreshing sweet treat. I see why people like cactus here! It has a mild taste that can be used for many things. Would you try cactus?

How is the food prepared?:

The shaved ice is prepared using a shaver machine to thinly shave the ice, and it is then scooped into a bowl.
