Bonjour, Moien, and Hallo from beautiful Luxembourg (pronounced Lux-emm-burrg)! My name is Prairie Kaya, but most people just call me P.K. It is so lovely to meet you!
I am a 22-year-old theatremaker and teacher from small-town Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Growing up in Oklahoma means a lot of time spent under the wide open sky, watching the sun paint pictures on the stretching blue horizon. As I kid, I remember wondering what else might lie beyond my beloved hills and trees. When I went to college, I was able to find out! Through my university’s Global Engagement Fellowship, I studied alongside other travelers in Scotland and Italy. It was during those semesters that a deep love for adventure and for meeting new people grew.
As I continued my education, a newer, bigger, lifelong goal sprouted. One day, I aim to create a new art school in the Great Plains; one that is free and open to all people! In order to learn more about schools around the world, I applied to the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship program to Luxembourg. To my delight, I got in! This year, I will be teaching English and theatre in two different Luxembourgish high schools.
Luxembourgish schools are very different than those of my home state. Did you know that the students in Luxembourg usually graduate speaking between four to seven languages? Additionally, Luxembourg, while small, is a very diverse country. Almost half of the people who live in Luxembourg come from other nations (1). Altogether, Luxembourg is a vibrant place brimming with multilingual and multicultural life.
