A food tour in Amsterdam

Introduction:

Do you like cheese, pancakes and waffles? Then you will love Dutch food! Let's learn about the classic Dutch foods and their relationship to the Netherlands.

What food did I try?:

When my family visited me, we went on a food tour of Amsterdam and tried many delicious Dutch foods! One of the most classic Dutch foods we tried was Gouda cheese. Gouda is actually named after a town in the Netherlands, and this type of cheese is a staple of the Dutch diet. In fact, they just call it cheese--almost all of the cheese at the grocery store is Gouda! You can get jong (young) or oud (old) Gouda. Young Gouda is very fresh and tastes more like provolone cheese in America, while old gouda is aged for a long time and can taste almost like Parmesan! Dutch people often eat this cheese every day in a simple sandwich with bread for lunch. We also tried bitterballen, a classic Dutch snack. Bitterballen are a mixture of meat and gravy made up into small balls and then deep fried. These little patties are very popular to eat when you are hanging out with your coworkers after work. Bitterballen are often served with a mustard dipping sauce as you can see in the picture. Another tasty food we tried was chicken satay. This is an Indonesian dish that is chicken roasted on a stick with a delicious peanut sauce on top.
