Pura Vida Costa Rica

One of my goals in coming to Costa Rica was to learn about their universal healthcare system, which I definitely did. I was very lucky to have been provided the opportunity to work firsthand with the system in an EBIAS clinic. I took away so many valuable lessons that will not only be used in my career but in my life. The importance of community, cultural understanding, and even empathy are just a few.

I was also able to explore both coasts of the country, volcanos, beaches, forests, and cities which was so magical. If you come to Costa Rica some of my favorites include Cahuita Beach, La Fortuna volcano, and of course the city of San Jose. I feared having to experience the feeling of missing out while I was away, but I was really so caught up in my life exploring this beautiful country that it was hard to be homesick.

I grew so many wonderful memories and relationships with people in Costa Rica from my awesome coworkers, other ICADS students, professors, and especially my host family. Coming from a super small family where I was raised by a single mom, this new dynamic was truly so special. I was able to live with all three generations of the family, the grandmother (my host mom), the daughter, and the grandson. Being able to sit down and eat dinner with everyone was something I looked forward to every day. I really loved every aspect of this adventure and I wouldn't have changed a thing.

A couple of tips I have to study abroad in school would be the following. 1) Talk with your study abroad advisor much ahead of time to set up the schedule (especially if you are in a rigorous program).
