However, I still had a delicious fry up with a vegan sausage to replace the meat, with the other parts of the dish kept the same. I also had a hashbrown, baked beans and some greens, nontraditional ingredients in place of the meats.

Potato farl, a unique type of bread made from potatoes, is important to the traditional fry up. This bread is special to Ireland. It was lightly toasted to be soft and delicious, and went perfectly with the rest of the food!

A fry up includes foods that can be grown and produced locally on the island of Ireland. In the North, where I live, the dish is called an "Ulster fry," named after the province containing the six counties that make up Northern Ireland-- Ulster! A province in Ireland is a bunch of counties brought together because of cultural or historical reasons. Irish provinces do not have their own governments, unlike American states.

Ireland is full of farmland, but historically, land used for growing crops to sell made up most of the available soil. Potatoes can grow in small areas and withstand difficult conditions. Plus, they’re quite versatile! Lots of Irish dishes are made with potatoes, whether they’re the star (like in Shepherd’s Pie) or mixed into something, like the potato farl I had in the fry up!
